Ingredients

  • 5 red onions
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 50 ml red wine
  • 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • Salt
  • Pepper (freshly ground)
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 4 leaves of lettuce (e.g., Lollo Rosso)
  • 4 slices beef steak about 120 g each (e.g., ribeye)
  • 8 slices white bread

Instructions

  1. 1.

Peel the onions and cut into rings. In 2 tbsp of not-too-hot oil, sauté slowly for 4-5 minutes until translucent. Add mustard seeds and deglaze with red wine. Add balsamic vinegar and simmer gently for about 10 more minutes; add a splash of water if needed. Season with salt and pepper.

  2. 2.

Wash the tomatoes, remove stems, and slice. Wash lettuce, dry by shaking, and tear into small pieces if desired. Pat steaks dry, season with salt and pepper, and sear in remaining hot oil 1-2 minutes per side (adjust to preference). Layer four bread slices with lettuce and tomato, top with steaks, distribute onions, then cover with the remaining bread slices.
