Ingredients
- 400 g waxy potatoes
- 400 g red potatoes (e.g., Red Emma)
- 1 Garlic clove
- 1 Tbsp soft butter
- 300 ml whipping cream
- 2 tbsp freshly chopped sage
- 80 g grated cheese (e.g., Emmental)
- Salt
- nutmeg
- Pepper (freshly ground)
Instructions
-
1.
Preheat the oven to 180°C fan.
-
2.
Peel the potatoes and slice thinly or shave. Halve the garlic clove and rub the cut surfaces around the baking dish. Brush with soft butter. Layer the potato slices in a brick‑wall pattern, alternating rows. Mix the cream with sage and cheese, then season heavily with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Pour over the potatoes so they are just covered.
-
3.
Bake the gratin in the preheated oven for about 50 minutes until golden brown. Test with a fork; if it slides in easily, the potatoes are cooked.
