Ingredients

  • 300 g mixed ground meat (beef and pork)
  • 1 small white onion
  • 1 Garlic clove
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil pesto (from jar, refrigerated section, organic store)
  • 600 g smaller tomatoes (ripe, or 500 g cherry tomatoes as substitute)
  • 2 tbsp extra‑virgin olive oil
  • 5 eggs
  • 150 ml milk
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • Salt
  • freshly ground pepper
  • freshly grated nutmeg
  • basil for garnish
  • Butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. 1.

Preheat the oven to 160 °C fan‑forced. Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. Heat the oil in a pan and sauté the onion and garlic over gentle heat until softened. Add the ground meat, stir until crumbly, then set aside to cool slightly.

  2. 2.

Beat the eggs and mix with milk and pesto. Add the cooled meat, sprinkle flour on top, combine well, and season heavily with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Grease a baking dish with butter and spread the mixture in it.

  3. 3.

Wash and halve the tomatoes, then arrange them over the meat mixture skin‑side down. Place the dish in the hot oven and bake for 30 minutes until golden brown. Garnish with basil leaves and serve warm.
