Ingredients

  • 300 g flour
  • 150 g fine sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 200 g cold butter
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp milk (optional)
  • flour
  • baking paper

Instructions

  1. 1.

Process the flour with the sugar, salt, vanilla sugar, egg and finely cut butter into a shortcrust dough. Divide the dough in half. Knead one half evenly with the cocoa powder and optional milk. Split both dough halves again, shape them into balls and refrigerate for 1–2 hours.

  2. 2.

Roll each dough ball to about 4 mm thickness and cut into strips roughly 6.5 cm wide. Place a light strip on top of a dark strip and roll from the long side. Cut the rolls into pieces about 20 cm long, wrap individually in cling film and refrigerate for at least an hour (overnight is better).

  3. 3.

Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Slice the rolls into 4 mm thick rounds and place them on a baking sheet lined with paper. Bake in the hot oven for about 10–12 minutes.
