Spoonsparrow: This sweet casserole is baked with stale rolls, apples, almonds and cinnamon.

Ingredients

  • 5 stale rolls
  • 600 g tart apples (e.g., Boskop)
  • butter (for greasing the pan)
  • 6 tbsp sugar
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp grated lemon zest
  • 70 g chopped almonds
  • 400 ml milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. 1.

Slice rolls into thin pieces. Peel apples, quarter them, remove cores and cut into thin slivers.

  2. 2.

Grease a large baking dish (or two smaller ones) with butter. Layer a sheet of roll slices, then spread some apple slivers on top. Sprinkle 3 tbsp sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, and almonds over the layer. Add another layer of rolls and apples.

  3. 3.

Whisk together milk, eggs, pinch of salt, and remaining sugar (about 3 tbsp). Pour the mixture over the layers. Dot with butter flakes on top.

  4. 4.

Bake the casserole in a preheated oven at 200 °C (180 °C fan; gas: level 3) for about 40 minutes until golden brown. Serve dusted with powdered sugar.
