Spoonsparrow: This sweet casserole is baked with stale rolls, apples, almonds and cinnamon.
Ingredients
- 5 stale rolls
- 600 g tart apples (e.g., Boskop)
- butter (for greasing the pan)
- 6 tbsp sugar
- 0.5 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tsp grated lemon zest
- 70 g chopped almonds
- 400 ml milk
- 3 eggs
- 1 pinch salt
- 2 tbsp butter
- powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions

Slice rolls into thin pieces. Peel apples, quarter them, remove cores and cut into thin slivers.

Grease a large baking dish (or two smaller ones) with butter. Layer a sheet of roll slices, then spread some apple slivers on top. Sprinkle 3 tbsp sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, and almonds over the layer. Add another layer of rolls and apples.

Whisk together milk, eggs, pinch of salt, and remaining sugar (about 3 tbsp). Pour the mixture over the layers. Dot with butter flakes on top.

Bake the casserole in a preheated oven at 200 °C (180 °C fan; gas: level 3) for about 40 minutes until golden brown. Serve dusted with powdered sugar.
