Homemade English Meatloaf Under Potato Topping

Ingredients
- 400 g starchy potatoes
- Salt
- 100 ml hot milk
- Nutmeg (freshly grated)
- soft butter (for the pan)
- 1 onion
- 2 carrots
- 1 celery stalk
- 750 g minced beef
- 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
- 250 ml meat broth
- pepper (ground)
- 50 g shredded cheese (e.g., cheddar or Emmental)

Step 1: Peel and wash the potatoes, place them in a pot with salted water, cover, bring to a boil, then simmer covered for about 25 minutes.

Step 2: Drain the potatoes, let them steam briefly, then mash finely with a potato masher. Stir in the milk until a thick batter forms, seasoning with salt and nutmeg.

Step 3: Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (about 350°F). Grease a pie tin with butter.

Step 4: Peel, wash, and trim the onion, carrot, and celery; dice them finely. In a hot pan, brown the minced beef in oil until crumbly. Add the vegetable cubes briefly, stir in tomato paste, then deglaze with broth. Bring to a boil and season with salt and pepper. Pour the meat mixture into the prepared tin.
