Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 8 slices Black Forest ham
  • 1 kg waxy potatoes
  • 2 onions
  • 4 pork sausages
  • 100 g Appenzeller (or Emmental) cheese
  • 250 ml milk (1.5% fat)
  • 125 g whipping cream
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • nutmeg

Instructions

    First, grease the baking dish with butter and line it with ham slices.

    Peel, wash and grate the potatoes finely. Squeeze out excess moisture with a kitchen towel. Peel and dice the onions finely. Slice the sausages and grate the cheese. Mix the onions, sausage slices, and cheese into the grated potatoes and spread evenly over the ham layers.

    Mix milk with whipping cream, season strongly with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Warm briefly and pour over the potatoes.

    Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (fan 160 °C; gas: level 2–3) for about 60–70 minutes until golden brown. Cover the casserole timely to prevent excessive browning of the surface.
