Grandma’s Matjes Salad

Spoonsparrow’s Grandma’s Matjes Salad always tastes wonderfully spicy and savory. A special treat to serve with crackers or fresh bread.

Ingredients

  • 4 matjes double fillets
  • 1 Red Onion
  • 2 tart apples
  • 2 pickled cucumbers
  • 100 g Sour cream
  • 100 g yogurt
  • 50 g mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt
  • a pinch of sugar
  • Pepper
  • 2 tbsp freshly chopped dill

Instructions

    Rinse the fillets and pat them dry. Cut into small pieces. Peel and finely dice the onion. Wash, peel, quarter, core, and dice the apples similarly to the pickled cucumbers. Set aside 1–2 tbsp of cucumber brine.

    Whisk together sour cream, yogurt, mayonnaise, cucumber brine, and lemon juice until smooth. Season with salt, sugar, and pepper. Fold in the matjes, dill, apples, onions, and cucumbers. Serve Grandma’s Matjes Salad with crisp rye crackers or fresh bread as desired.
