French-Style Potato Gratin

Ingredients
- 2 Garlic cloves
- butter (for greasing the dish)
- 1.5 kg waxy potatoes
- 400 g onions
- 1 bunch spring onions
- 100 g butter
- 200 g freshly grated Gruyère cheese
- 100 g crème double
- Salt
- pepper (ground)
- 1 l chicken broth

Preheat oven to 180°C with fan and top heating. Peel the garlic cloves for the gratin. Rub the baking dish with a garlic clove, then grease it lightly with butter. Wash, peel, and slice the potatoes very thinly or into rounds. Peel the onions, trim the spring onions, finely chop both, and sauté in butter together with cheese and whisked crème double. Season with salt and pepper.

Layer the sliced potatoes alternately with the onion mixture in the greased dish, pouring chicken broth over them so that the potatoes are almost covered; add a little more broth if needed. Bake in the preheated oven for 40–45 minutes until golden brown. If necessary, cover with foil. Serve hot.
