Catalan Toast with Tomatoes: Manchego cheese and Serrano ham crown this Spanish snack!

Ingredients

  • 250 g tomatoes (4 tomatoes)
  • Pepper
  • 500 g crusty bread with rye (about 22 cm diameter)
  • 3 Garlic cloves
  • 100 g Serrano ham
  • 125 g Manchego cheese
  • olive oil
  • coarse Sea salt

Instructions

    Wash the tomatoes, cut off the stem ends in a wedge shape. Slice the tomatoes and then mash them into a coarse purée. Place in a bowl and season with a little pepper.

    Slice the bread into 12 pieces and place on a baking rack. Toast each side under the hot oven grill until golden brown; this takes about 1½ to 2½ minutes per side, depending on desired browning.

    Peel the garlic and rub one side of each bread slice with it. Add the unpeeled garlic pieces to the tomato purée.

    Slice the Serrano ham into thin strips. Shave the Manchego cheese with a vegetable peeler.

    Arrange the bread slices, tomato purée, olive oil, sea salt, cheese, and ham decoratively on a platter. When serving, guests take some tomato purée onto a slice of bread, drizzle with olive oil, season with a pinch of salt, and then add cheese or ham as desired.
