Ingredients

  • 200 g lima beans (white)
  • 1 kg soup meat (beef)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika powder
  • 3 onions
  • 150 g pearl barley
  • 4 large potatoes
  • 100 ml oil

Instructions

    Wash the beans, rinse them and soak overnight in plenty of cold water. Cut the beef into large cubes, season with salt, pepper, and rub with paprika. Peel the potatoes and cut them into large, bite‑sized pieces. Peel the onions and roughly dice them. Heat the oil in a large oven‑proof pot and sear the meat cubes on all sides until browned. Add the onions and cook briefly more. Drain the beans and add them along with the potatoes and pearl barley, stirring to combine.

    Fill the pot with cold water until it is about 3 cm above the ingredients. Bring to a boil, cover with a lid, place in the oven overnight and bake at 100 °C for about 8 hours, as no fire may be made or work done on the Sabbath.

    Take the stew out of the oven for lunch and serve.
