Ingredients

  • 1 Garlic clove
  • 800 g waxy potatoes
  • 350 ml whipping cream
  • 80 g grated cheese (e.g., Gruyère, Emmental)
  • 2 tbsp crème fraîche
  • Salt
  • Pepper (freshly ground)
  • Nutmeg (freshly grated)

Instructions

  1. 1.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F) with both fan and top heating.

  2. 2.

Peel and halve the garlic clove. Rub four small gratin dishes with the cut sides. Wash, peel lengthwise, halve, and slice or shave the potatoes thinly. Evenly distribute the potato slices in the dishes. Whisk together the cream, half of the grated cheese, and crème fraîche; season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg, then pour over the potatoes. The potatoes should be almost covered; add more or less cream if needed. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and bake in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.

  3. 3.

If desired, turn on the grill during the last 10 minutes to crisp the top layer of potatoes.
