Ingredients

  • 8 matjes fillets
  • 2 onions
  • 4 pickles (with 3-4 tbsp pickle water)
  • 2 sour apples
  • 100 g mayonnaise
  • 100 g Sour cream
  • 1 tbsp freshly chopped dill
  • 1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp juniper berries
  • Salt
  • Pepper (freshly ground)
  • a pinch of sugar

Instructions

    Pat the fillets dry and cut into bite‑sized pieces. Peel the onions and slice into rings. Quarter the pickles lengthwise and cut into chunks. Wash the apples, quarter them, remove the core, and cut the quarters into pieces. Combine all prepared ingredients in a bowl.

    Mix mayonnaise with sour cream, herbs, and juniper berries; season with pickle water, salt, pepper, and sugar. Spread over the matjes mixture, cover, and refrigerate for about 1 hour before serving. Stir again before serving and adjust seasoning.
