English Meat and Potato Mash Casserole
Spoonsparrow’s English meat and potato mash casserole is easy to prepare and tastes great as dinner or lunch.
Ingredients
- 600 g starchy boiling potatoes
- Salt
- 2 carrots
- 200 g celery stalks
- 2 onions
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 800 g ground beef
- 2 tbsp Tomato paste
- 300 ml meat broth
- pepper (ground)
- 80 ml milk (3.5% fat), hot
- nutmeg
- 100 g Cheddar cheese
Instructions

Peel, wash, and boil the potatoes in salted water for about 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, wash, trim, and dice the carrots and celery stalks; peel and finely dice the onions.

Heat olive oil in a pan. Add onions and ground beef and sear for 5 minutes over high heat. Add carrots and celery and cook for another 3 minutes. Stir in tomato paste and roast for 1 minute. Pour in broth and season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Drain the potatoes, let them steam dry, then mash or press them. Stir in hot milk and season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Spoon the meat sauce into a baking dish, spread the mashed potatoes over it, and grate cheddar cheese on top. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (160 °C fan) for about 45 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.
