Ingredients

  • 200 g starchy potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 Carrot
  • 1 stalk Celery
  • 400 g ground beef
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • 150 ml meat broth
  • Salt
  • black pepper (freshly ground)
  • 40 ml hot milk
  • Nutmeg (freshly grated)
  • butter (for the pan)
  • 50 g shredded cheese (e.g., cheddar or Emmental)

Instructions

  1. 1.

Place peeled and washed potatoes in a pot of salted water, cover, bring to a boil, then simmer covered for about 25 minutes.

  2. 2.

Peel, wash, and trim onion, carrot, and celery; dice into small cubes. Brown the ground beef in hot oil in a pan until crumbly. Add the vegetable cubes briefly, stir in tomato paste, and deglaze with broth. Bring to a boil, then turn off the heat and season with salt and pepper.

  3. 3.

Season again with salt and pepper as needed.

  4. 4.

Drain the potatoes, let them steam off briefly, then mash finely with a potato masher. Stir in milk until a thick batter forms, seasoning with salt and nutmeg.

  5. 5.

Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (350°F). Butter a pie dish. Spoon the beef mixture into the dish. Spread the mashed potato evenly over the meat so it’s fully covered. Sprinkle cheese on top and bake for 40–45 minutes until golden brown.
