Ingredients

  • 2 onions
  • 300 g flour
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 Eggs
  • 250 ml buttermilk
  • 150 g cornflakes
  • vegetable oil (for frying)
  • pepper (ground)
  • 1 egg
  • 4 slices butter cheese
  • 4 burger buns (with sesame)
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 4 lettuce leaves

Instructions

  1. 1.

For the burgers, peel and finely chop the onions and sauté them in 1 tbsp oil until translucent. Briefly cook tomato paste with them, then transfer to a bowl. Mix with ground meat, breadcrumbs, herbs, salt, pepper, and egg. Knead into a well-formed dough and shape into four patties. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour.

  2. 2.

For the onion rings, peel the onions and cut into approximately 0.5 cm thick rings. Separate them. In a bowl mix flour with baking powder and salt. Toss the onion rings in this mixture and tap off excess flour. Whisk eggs with buttermilk well. Stir into the flour mixture until a smooth batter forms. Crush cornflakes in a freezer bag with a rolling pin. Sprinkle onto a plate. Dip the onion rings through the batter, let them drain, then coat with crushed cornflakes. Fry the rings in hot oil (about 170°C) until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

  3. 3.

Cook the burger patties in the remaining hot oil in a pan, browning one side for 4-5 minutes. Flip and place a slice of cheese on each. Cook another 4-5 minutes. Slice the buns in half and toast the cut sides if desired. Wash tomatoes and slice them. Shake lettuce leaves dry.

  4. 4.

Place lettuce leaves on the bottom halves of the buns. Add one patty on top, then layer with tomato slices and onion rings, and cover with the top bun. Secure with a skewer if desired and serve.
